      4.Speaking about English holidays.
T.: Your task was to find new information about English holidays. You are divided into two groups:
England and Ukraine. Let’s discuss them.

Dialogue.

Ukr.: Do you know any holidays in Great Britain?
Eng.: Yes, we do. Because every country has its own holidays and traditions.
Ukr.: What are they?
Eng.: In winter we have Christmas, New Year’s Day and St. Valentine’s Day. In spring we have Easter ,
Mother’s Day, April Fool’s Day and May Day and in autumn Halloween.
Ukr.: When is Christmas celebrated in Great Britain? How do you celebrate it?
Eng1.: Christmas is celebrated on the 25 th of December. For many British family this is the most interesting
holiday of the year. On that day they celebrate the birth of Christ and winter coming. On Christmas
Eve the streets and houses are decorated with colourful lamps and traditional holly.
By dinner time the whole family is gathered round the table. They have a big turkey and a
Christmas pudding. They eat the pudding very carefully because traditionally a silver coin is placed
into the pudding. It brings good luck to a person who finds it. A carol is a Christmas song. People
often sing carols on Christmas Eve in streets or at home.
Eng.2:  In Britain people have many Christmas traditions. We have an interesting tradition with Christmas
stockings. In the evening of the 24 th of December children hang their Christmas stockings on their
beds. Father Christmas ( Santa Claus ) puts presents into them.
Eng.3: And a very interesting tradition with Misletoe. It is an evergreen plant with small leaves and small
white berries. On Christmas Eve there is a bunch of Misletoe in every house. Under this bunch
           boys kiss girls.
Eng.:    Do you have Christmas in Ukraine? When does Christmas come in Ukraine?
Ukr.:   On the 7 th of January Christmas comes. It is also a religious holiday because it is connected with
the birth of Christ. On the Christmas Eve children bring traditional supper to their godparents.
They treat them to kutya, vareniki and sweet buns. The next day some people go round carol-singing.
Ukr.:   How do you celebrate New Year’s Day in Great Britain?
Eng.:   This holiday is especially popular in Scotland. Late at night on December 31st people go out to
visit their friend’s places. They don’t knock at the door. They come in without permission.
The first visitor is a man. According to the ancient tradition he carries a piece of coal – to wish
warmth, a piece of  bread – to wish food and a silver coin – to wish wealth. At 12 o’clock people
usually stand in a circle and cross their hands. They sing the old Scottish song “ Auld Lang Syne.”
Eng.:   Do you like New Year’s Day?
Ukr.:   Yes, of course. In Ukraine New Year’s Day is often called a family holiday. It is celebrated on the
31st of December. We have much fun on that day.
What holidays do you like best of all?
Eng.:    As for me I like Easter best of all. It is a religious holiday. British people bake cross buns, boil and
paint eggs or make chocolate eggs. At midnight we go to the church. I like the customs of decorating
eggs for children. These eggs are hidden in yard and the children try to find them.
Ukr.:    We also have Easter holiday in Ukraine. As for me I am also looking forward to Easter, which is
my favourite religious holiday. I’m fond of eating the holiday cakes called “pasky” and other delicious
dishes which my granny cooks before that feast.

T: Your task was to find new information about Ukrainian holiday.
You are divided into two groups: England and Ukraine. Let’s discuss them.
      Dialogue.
Eng:  Are there any holidays in Ukraine?
Ukr: Almost every country has its own holidays and traditions.
Eng:  What are they?
Ukr: Ukrainian people celebrate both public and religious holidays.New Year’s Day, Day of  Knowledge, Constitution Day … are our national holidays ( or public holidays ).
Eng: And what about religious holidays? In Great Britain  Christmasis celebrated on the 25th of December. On that day they celebrate the birth of Christ and winter coming. In Britain people have many Christmas traditions.
Ukr 1: Yes, as for Christmas it is a  national holiday in Ukraine. It is my favourite holiday.  On the 7th of January Christmas comes. It is also a religious holiday because it is connected with the birth of Jesus Christ. On the Christmas Eve  children bring traditional supper to their godparents They treat them to kutya, vareniki and sweet buns. The next day some people go round carol-singing.
Ukr 2: Frankly speaking, as for religious holidays I don’t know many of them, but my granny does. She often attends church. As for me I am looking forward to Easter, which is my favourite religious holiday.
Ukr 3: It was nice to find out more about Ukrainian holidays. While celebrating them we have to restore our national holidays and  customs.
P1: I’d like to tell you about men’s clothes. The main element of the men’s clothes is an embroidered shirt. It was sewn of white linen. The collar of it was embroidered with grey, black or blue and red threads.
P 2: There are two kinds of  Ukrainian trousers: narrow trousers and sharovary. Sharovary are almost always red. Men wore sashes. The young men wore red and green sashes, the old men wore black sashes.
P 3: There is a tradition to wear hats and caps. By the way, it was a sin to go with an uncovered head. There were fur caps.
P 4: I’d like to draw your attention to the women’s clothes. The women’s blouse is the oldest piece of clothes of our foremothers.
P 5: I’d like to draw your attention to a chaplet which is not only the girl’s decoration, but it is also a guard. To twine a chaplet is a real science ( art ). Our foremothers knew when and how to twine, when to gather flowers for the chaplets. It was interesting for me to know that the girls began to wear chaplet at the age of three.  There were forget-me-nots, marigolds, periwinkles, camomiles in them.  To sum it up there were 12 flowers in the chaplet of a grown-up girl. I won’t go into details but in short there are 77 chaplets in Ukraine, 40 of them are medicinal, 24 are ritual, 13 are  magical.
P 6: I want to say a few words about ribbons. There were 21 ribbons in the chaplet. For example, a yellow ribbon is a symbol of sun, a light-green is a symbol of  beauty and youth.
P 7: There is one thing in the Ukrainian house that is very important. Our people say “The house without a towel is like a family without children”. A towel on the wall is our old tradition. A towel is compared with a song. What are the main colours in the towel? Love and sorrow, red and black. But there are other colours in the towel. What do they mean? For example, blue is the symbol of  the blue sky,  yellow is a symbol of  health and success. As we know, bread and a towel are our eternal symbols. Bread and salt on the towel are a symbol of hospitality of the Ukrainian people.
Eng: Thank you very much for your interesting information about Ukrainian Traditions.
